Auberge de la Croisade

We discovered the Auberge de la Croisade by accident. It is on a little road between Cruzy and Capestang, next to the Canal du Midi. It seemed to be in the middle of nowhere from the direction we came, but it is a well known restaurant, and we got the last table for lunch on the Sunday we first visited, which was over the New Year holiday period. Subsequently we have been back several times, reserving in advance, and have not been disappointed, either by food quality or service.

Bruno runs this restaurant and greets his guests in French, English or German, shaking hands and smiling to everyone and exchanging kisses with the more regular customers. He is always full of energy and has a joke to share and he is, no doubt, one of the reasons people come back.

Good home cooking is the other reason. The menu offers a good selection of dishes, from terrines and pates to an assortment of fish and meat dishes which reflect the seasonal produce. The lunch set menus are reasonably priced for the quantity and quality, and there is a good selection of local wines that Bruno is happy to advise on. Dinner menus cost more, as is normal in France, but are not overly expensive. There is also an extensive a la carte menu. Service is courteous and attentive.

The location of the Auberge de la Croisade is ideal. It sits on the banks of the Canal du Midi and welcomes river barge and motor vehicle customers equally. In winter, on a clear day, the snow-capped Pyrenées are visible across the canal to the south. In summer there are tables outside as well as in, and lunch can be enjoyed in the gardens next to the canal, under a canopy of vines and climbing plants.

The Auberge de la Croisade closes mid-week, and it is advisable to book in advance to avoid disappointment.
